DAS TRIEST, more than 300 years ago a station for the stagecoach connection between Vienna and Trieste, is today a leading address when it comes to hotel and restaurant design by Sir Terence Conran + Conran Partners in Austria. The design challenge was to transform the outdated hotel “Stadt Triest” into a unique, discreet and luxurious contemporary building. Today it is a prime example of a successful symbiosis of historical building structure and modern-day design. The old cross vaults, which has been housing the former stables, have been converted into salons, suites and conference rooms with a distinctive flair and state-of-the-art equipment. In the course of an expansion of the historic building planned by the Vienna based architectural office Wehdorn Architekten, guests are offered even more space and service. Now they are able to take a seat in the redesigned hotel rooms on armchairs and chairs of rosconi’s ‘Kollektion.58’ by Austrian architect and furniture designer Karl Schwanzer. ‘Kollektion.58’ consists of an armchair, outdoor armchair, contract chair and contract table and is characterized by its conical lines and contours. At the same time the collection uses exclusive materials: high-quality fabrics and leather, solid wood, veneer and chrome. Karl Schwanzer, architect of the Austrian pavilion for the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels, which is known as the ‘21er Haus’ nowadays, designed the striking armchair particularly for the ‘21er Haus’.
