Berlin’s New Friedrichstadt-Palast is famous far beyond the city itself. State-of-the-art technology and an internationally renowned dance company make its shows a truly unforgettable experience. Under new management since 2007, the theatre has gone from strength to strength. It was thus high time to improve this grand socialist-era building’s appearance.
We immediately decided to draw attention to this unique building, with its characteristic exuberant Art Déco and Art Nouveau-inspired decorative elements. This is coupled with the no-nonsense character of the. We maintained the building’s pre-fabricated concrete slab architecture while visually raising the light-coloured building onto a pedestal made of darker stone.
The square and its surrounding flight of stairs then became one large and inviting space. Intricate details that might steal the show from the building were consciously omitted.
The splendour of the coloured windows used to be apparent only when sunlight flooded the foyer, and yet, the theatre only comes alive at night! This problem was addressed, and a new lighting scheme now allows the Friedrichstadt-Palast to glow from within, making its splendour visible from afar. Let the show begin!
The expansive steps give theatre goers ample space to meet before the show or simply serve as a place to see and be seen during the interval.
The theatre’s architectural grid has been extended into the square’s paving and site furniture. The benches’ natural black stone emulates the appearance of leather, indicating that the foyer begins outside.
